LaserSpeed® gauge measures product length and speed with ±0.05% accuracy and helps manufacturers improve product quality, increase productivity, and realize savings

Indianapolis, Indiana –April 18, 2014 – Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will be exhibiting its LaserSpeed non-contact length and speed gauge at the AISTech 2014 Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition (booth #236). The show will be held at the Indiana Convention Center from May 5 – 8. Beta LaserMike will also be giving a technical paper presentation on the benefits of using non-contact laser measurement in Mass Flow Automatic Gauge Control (MFAGC) applications.

The LaserSpeed gauge uses advanced, laser-based technology to precisely measure the length and speed of hot and cold steel and non-ferrous products without making contact. This laser gauge projects a unique pattern on the surface of the product. As the product moves, light is scattered back to the LaserSpeed gauge. This information is translated into product speed and pulses are produced to determine the product length. Length and speed measurements are captured with better than ±0.05% accuracy, ±0.02% repeatability. Since LaserSpeed uses no moving parts and is factory calibrated, it is the ideal replacement for contact tachometers which are prone to measurement errors caused by slippage, dirt build-up, day-to-day wear, and extreme environmental conditions.

LaserSpeed works on all types of products, such as rod, bar, tube, pipe, slabs, cold/hold strip, and profile. Beta LaserMike offers a complete series of gauges including:

LS8000 Series – precisely measures length and speed at distances ranging from 300 mm to over 2,500 mm (12 in. to 98.4 in), and speeds up to 20,000 m/min (65,600 ft/min.)

LS9000 Series – similar in performance to the LS8000 and accurately measures forward and reverse directions, as well as down to true zero speed (no motion)

Depending on the application, the LS8000 and LS9000 series gauges can be used as stand-alone solutions or packaged in E-, X- or C-version housings. These housings enable the gauges to be used in harsh dry or hot wet environments, or mounted inside the C-Frame of an x-ray gauge. Both units come equipped with an air wipe/quick change window and air purge system to keep the system clean and laser path clear for proper measurements and maximum uptime. A number of accessories are also available to meet specific operating and production requirements.

Technical Paper Presentation
The technical paper entitled "Implementing an Accurate, Reliable Measurement System for Improving Mass Flow Automatic Gauge Control in Rolling Mills and Related Process Applications" will be co-presented by Jerome Dapore, Engineer for Beta LaserMike’s line of LaserSpeed gauging products. This paper will be presented in the Cold Mill – Control session on Tuesday, May 6 at 10:30 am. The paper highlights the challenges of obtaining accurate gauge control in cold rolling steel and non-ferrous mills as mill speeds increase and manufacturers work to reduce the thickness of metals. Mass Flow Automatic Gauge Control processes require the accurate thickness and speed measurements of the strip going into and out of the mill stand. The paper looks at how mechanical contact gauging systems indirectly measure the speed of the strip and are subject to measurement errors due to slippage. The paper also describes how modern rolling mills are adopting non-contact laser gauges to directly measure the strip speed with ±0.05% accuracy, ±0.02% repeatability. In addition, the paper describes a proven method to accurately and consistently capture length and speed measurements, and discusses the process improvements and production savings that can be achieved.
