Advances in high-accuracy, non-contact laser length and speed measurement for steel production

Ranchi, India – January 14, 2014 –Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will be delivering a technical presentation to iron and steel manufacturers in India on the latest advances in laser, non-contact length and speed measurement at the 4th International Conference on Automation and Information Technology in Iron & Steel Making (AITISM’14) in Ranchi, India the week of February 5 – 7, 2014. The AITISM conference will be held at the Ispat Bhawan, R&D Centre for Iron & Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited, Doranda, Ranchi, India.

The technical paper entitled "Automated, Non-Contact Measurement Method for Capturing Accurate, Reliable Length and Speed Measurements in Steel Production" will be presented by Richard Snaith, Sales Director for Europe, Middle East, Asia, and India at Beta LaserMike. The paper presentation highlights the importance of capturing accurate length and speed measurements on continuous slab, billet, and bloom casters and the difficulty that’s typically encountered due to a number of mechanical system challenges, such as heat, scale-build up, and the deterioration of mechanical parts. The paper discusses the new generation of cost-efficient, higher accuracy gauges, such as Beta LaserMike’s LaserSpeed gauge, and how it’s being utilized in many continuous caster manufacturing applications today. This advanced measurement technology has the ability to measure these dimensions at very slow speeds with +/-0.05% accuracy and without contacting the slab or billet.
