Manufacturers to get inside details on how accurate in-process measurement and process control improves product quality and provides significant material savings

Dayton, Ohio – January 10, 2014 – Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will exhibit its system solution for accurately monitoring and controlling the various dimensions of medical tube products at MD&M West 2014, February 11 - 13 at the Anaheim Convention Center, CA.

Manufacturers of IVs, catheters, ultra-thin micro tubing, and other life-critical medical devices face a number of market forces to increase productivity and produce medical tubing at lower costs while meeting the stringent quality and safety requirements from regulatory bodies. Beta LaserMike enables manufacturers to effectively meet these challenges by offering a complete end-to-end system solution from the extruder to wind-up machine that integrates ultrasonic wall thickness and concentricity measurement, diameter and ovality measurement, fault detection, length and speed measurement, and process controller, as well as off-line sample inspection.

Beta LaserMike will exhibit its UltraScan system, a powerful and unique ultrasonic gauge that provides non-contact precision measurement of product wall thickness and concentricity. It is capable of measuring products with wall thicknesses down to 25 μm (0.001 in.) on tubes as small as 250 μm (0.010 in.). UltraScan uses multiple transducers to continuously monitor tube wall dimensions. The patented “Snap Technology” automatically sets up the waveforms of all transducers, tracks tolerances to catch wall variations, and provides higher accuracy of average wall and concentricity measurements with assured repeatability. This gives medical tube manufacturers the ability to immediately make process adjustments to avoid scrap and ensure quality results.

Beta LaserMike will also exhibit the latest AccuScan 5000 series of high-speed diameter and ovality gauges. These dual-axis gauges capture measurements at an ultra-fast rate of 2400 samples per second per axis and provide the highest single-scan accuracy in the industry. AccuScan gauges effectively measure transparent, translucent, and opaque products up to 80 mm (3.15 in.) in diameter. All gauges offer highly flexible communications including RS-232, Ethernet/IP, Ethernet TCP/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, CANOpen, Analog, and Digital. AccuScan gauges are built into a tough IP65 rated housing and provide reliable, long-lasting operation. An enhanced ultra-bright display enables users to clearly view and easily configure measurement data.

Beta LaserMike’s new LN3015 lump and neckdown detector quickly and reliably spots product flaws before they become costly production problems. Fast-sensing and processing technology instantly detects sudden changes in the product diameter to effectively catch the smallest of flaws. The LN3015 measures product diameters up to 15 mm (0.6 in.) and detects flaw height down to 0.02 mm (0.0008 in.) at line speeds up to 3000 m/min. (9,842 ft/min.). It is designed with a user-friendly operator interface, accepts a range of inputs, and provides highly flexible communications such as RS-232, Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, and Profinet.

Also on display is Beta LaserMike’s LaserSpeed® non-contact gauge for measuring the length and speed of products. This measurement solution delivers better than ±0.05% accuracy and ±0.02% repeatability, making it an ideal solution for replacing error-prone, high-maintenance contact tachometers. The latest version of this gauge, the LaserSpeed 9000, detects both forward and reverse directions as well as zero speed (non-moving product).

Integral to the measurement system solution, Beta LaserMike will show how the DataPro process controller and data management system ties all the gauges together to continuously monitor product dimensions and automatically control the line to keep production processes and product quality under control.

For off-line sample and cut part inspection, Beta LaserMike presents its BenchMike system for Quality Control (QC) and plant floor environments. This bench-top system gives operators a simple and repeatable system for measuring product samples and immediately knowing whether they meet specifications within tolerances of less than 1 micron (0.000040 in.). BenchMike provides fast, accurate, and repeatable dimensional measurements of diameter, multiple ODs, TIR, taper, and part position.
