Dusseldorf, Germany – October 18, 2012 – Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will be demonstrating the productivity advantages of its LaserSpeed non-contact length and speed measurement solution to steel makers at STAHL 2012. This event is being held at the Congress Center Dusseldorf on November 9. Beta LaserMike is located at Stand F23.

The LaserSpeed gauge uses advanced, laser-based technology to directly and precisely measure the length and speed of hot and cold steel products without making contact. This laser gauge projects a unique pattern on the surface of the product. As the product moves, light is scattered back to the LaserSpeed gauge. This information is translated into product speed and pulses are produced to determine the product length. Length and speed measurements are captured with better than ±0.05% accuracy, 0.02% repeatability. Since LaserSpeed uses no moving parts and is factory calibrated, it is the ideal replacement for contact tachometers which are prone to measurement errors caused by slippage, dirt build-up, day-to-day wear, and extreme environmental conditions.

LaserSpeed works on all types of products in mill applications, such as:
• Continuous slab casters
• Billet and bloom casters
• Cutting control
• Elongation control in temper and skin pass mills
• Gauge control in cold rolling mills

Beta LaserMike offers a complete series of gauges. The LS8000 Series gauge precisely measures length and speed at distances ranging from 300 mm to over 2,500 mm (12 in. to 98.4 in), and speeds up to 20,000 m/min (65,600 ft/min.). The LS9000 Series gauge is similar in performance to the LS8000 and accurately measures forward and reverse directions, as well as zero speed (product at standstill). Depending on the application, the LS8000 and LS9000 series gauges can be used as stand-alone solutions or packaged in E-, X- or C-version housings. These housings enable the gauges to be used in harsh dry or hot wet environments, or mounted inside the C-Frame of an x-ray gauge. Both units come equipped with an air wipe/quick change window and air purge system to keep the system clean and laser path clear for proper measurements and maximum uptime. A number of accessories are also available to meet specific operating and production requirements.
