LaserSpeed encoder accurately measures product length and speed to help manufacturers increase productivity, improve quality, and realize significant savings

Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, reports that its innovative LaserSpeed® length and speed encoder has helped flexible packaging manufacturers to accurately and consistently measure the length and speed of products during production to better control product stretch.

Manufacturers of flexible packaging have applications where they need to stretch products to very specific and accurate thicknesses. Most manufacturers depend on the accuracy of their drive speeds or contact encoders. Products typically exhibit a certain amount of slipping on the drive roller based on texture, product composition, or tension at other points on the line. A contact encoder attached to the drive roller exhibits the same problems. A contact encoder riding on the product reveals wheel wear, slippage, and calibration issues. To solve this problem, manufacturers have installed the LaserSpeed non-contact encoder at critical measurement points along the line to accurately determine the amount of stretch of the product.

The LaserSpeed encoder uses advanced, laser-based technology to precisely measure the length and speed of product during production without making contact with the material. This laser encoder projects a unique pattern on the surface of the product. As the product moves, light is scattered back to the LaserSpeed unit. This information is translated into product speed and pulses are produced to determine the product length. Length and speed measurements are captured with better than +0.05% accuracy. Beta LaserMike offers a complete line of LaserSpeed encoders with measurement speeds up to 39,400 ft/min (12,000 m/min), standoff distances to 39.4 in (1000 mm), and measurement depth of field to 3.0 in (100 mm).

Beta LaserMike will be displaying the LaserSpeed encoder at the upcoming CPP Expo (Converting & Package Printing Expo) in booth #644.
