High-accuracy, non-contact measurement solutions deliver productivity, quality, and cost-saving benefits to plastics manufacturers

Guangzhou, PR China – April 8, 2013 – Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will showcase the latest non-contact measurement solutions for plastics and rubber manufacturing applications at the Chinaplas trade fair (booth K55, Hall 9.2) in Guangzhou, PR China from May 20 - 23. Attendees will see first-hand the many advantages of using Beta LaserMike non-contact gauges to automatically and accurately measure and control all aspects of their production process, such as product diameter, wall thickness, and length and speed.

“Manufacturers of plastic pipe and tube have been looking for accurate product inspection methods for many years,” says Stuart Manser, Director of Asia Sales for Beta LaserMike. “And, quality control and material savings have been primary drivers. At this year’s Chinaplas, Beta LaserMike is showing China manufacturers the many advantages of high-precision, non-contact on-line measurement to automatically collect product data and provide the necessary feedback for process control.”

Beta LaserMike will exhibit its UltraScan system, a powerful and unique ultrasonic gauge that provides non-contact precision measurement of product wall thickness, eccentricity, diameter, and ovality. UltraScan is used across a broad range of industries in a variety of plastic pipe and tube applications. It is capable of measuring products with wall thicknesses down to 25 μm (0.001 in.) on tubes as small as 250 μm (0.010 in.) and larger products with diameters up to 660 mm (26.0 in.). For example, this on-line gauge provides high-precision measurements for medical tube, automotive tube, heat-shrink tube applications. It uses multiple transducers to continuously monitor tube wall dimensions. The patented “Snap Technology” automatically sets up the waveforms of all transducers, tracks tolerances to catch wall variations, and provides higher accuracy of average wall and concentricity measurements with assured repeatability. This gives plastic pipe and tube manufacturers the ability to immediately make process adjustments to avoid scrap and ensure quality results.

Beta LaserMike will also exhibit its AccuScan 5000 series of diameter and ovality gauges. These dual-axis gauges capture measurements at a rate of 2400 samples per second and can measure outer diameters (ODs) up to 175 mm (6.89 in.). All gauges offer highly flexible communications including Ethernet IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, CanOpen, and RS-232. AccuScan gauges are built into a tough IP65 rated housing and provide reliable, long-lasting operation. An optional enhanced ultra-bright display is available to view and configure measurement data.

Also on display is Beta LaserMike’s LaserSpeed® non-contact gauge for measuring the length and speed of products. This measurement solution delivers better than ±0.05% accuracy, making it an ideal solution for replacing error-prone, high-maintenance contact tachometers. The latest version of this gauge, the LaserSpeed 9000, detects both forward and reverse directions as well as zero speed (non-moving product).

Integral to the measurement system solution, Beta LaserMike will show how the DataPro process controller and management system ties all the gauges together to continuously monitor product dimensions and automatically control the line to keep production processes and product quality under control.

For off-line sample and cut part inspection, Beta LaserMike presents its BenchMike system for Quality Control (QC) and plant floor environments. This bench-top system gives operators a simple and repeatable system for measuring product samples and immediately knowing whether they meet specifications within tolerances of less than 1 micron (0.000040 in.). BenchMike provides fast, accurate, and repeatable dimensional measurements of diameter, multiple ODs, TIR, taper, and part position.
